General Accounting Department (usually includes A/P, A/R, Fixed Assets, some cases can be huge depending on industry)
Finance Department
Audit Department

Bookkeeper / Clerk / Staff / Associate / Assistant (A/P, A/R, etc) -> Supervisor
Supervisor & Accountant -> Accounting Manager
Accounting Manager & Financial Analyst & Senior Accountant -> Finance Controller
Finance Controller -> VP Finance
VP Finance -> CFO

invoice coding
data entry (尤其小键盘速度)
cheque run
maintain vendor list & A/P subledger
filing
respond to requests from vendor/operation/finance/auditor/management, etc.

purchase order
invoice review (matching, coding, approval)
expense reporting system
corporate credit card, etc.

A/R:
invoice
deposit
collection
maintain customer list & A/R subledger
debit & credit notes
work with customer/pricing department/finance/logistics department, etc.

Accountant:
bank reconciliation
month-end closing
post G/L entry (usually period end adjustment, prepaid, correction, accrual, allocation, etc)
B/S reconciliation
reconcile sub-ledger to G/L
maintain G/L
fixed assets
GST QST
Trial Balance
process electronic batch invoice
inter-company reconciliation, etc.

Senior Accountant:
cost accounting
corporate tax
financial reporting
foreign exchange
specialist like hedging accounting, etc.

Financial Analyst:
budget & forecast
decision support
ERP implementation
process improvement
ERP super user
maintain chart of accounts
report writing & maintenance (P&L, B/S, TB, variance, GM, Profitability, etc)
Compliance (SOX B198)
internal control
P&L consolidation
data migration
GAAP reconciliation
variance analysis
financial analysis (ratio, pricing, margin, profitability, KPI, etc)
train business managers about financial process & applications
ad-hoc projects, etc.

Career Path:

Accounting, Business

- Internal control & Analyst position increase。

Q&A:

有机会去做一些volunteer(不要去私企,尤其是华人小企业), part-time工作,或者CO-OP是比较好的办法,3-6个月拿个好reference(最好是CA CMA CGA P.Eng这类专业人士),为以后铺路足矣。

Volunteer!

Transferable skills,transferable skills, transferable skills!

Hire for attitude, train for skills.

Answer II: I have a friend who was pregnant when she went to interview and got the offer. But she didn't tell the hiring manager about this. After she start work, the manager knew it and didn't assign her any important task. Shortly after she gave birth and went back work, she got laid off.

-by Realblue.
You should tell them before they can tell by just looking at you.So say about 4 months pregnant you should really go see your manager and tell him/her formally. If they figured out by looking at your tummy it would be unprofessional.
Anyway, you need to sit down with the manager to figure out the arrangements for your maternity leave, both personal issues as well as professional ones. If you let them know well in advance they would appreciate it as well.
But you really don't need to tell them before 3 months.

Answer:

Question:

You can find some easier job, such as grading, in the later part of your pregnancy. If you are lucky and the RA jobs is not too demanding, you can still find some professor to hire you. By 11yy

Misc.:

W2 and 1099 form 2007-06-20 11:48:50

How to prepare the first phone intervi

ring---- ring----
Your phone is ringing, you picked up the phone.

HR: Hello! May I talk to Shui-ks-in (老美不会念ShuiXin)?
u: -- who? wrong number.
-- who is this?

HR: I am Judy Smith, from 薄壳栗 university, I am calling for a scheduled job interview.
u: -- job interview? which job?
-- 薄壳栗 university? Are you sure? My husband told me he only mailed my resume to 丝毯富 university.
(baby is crying---)

u: -- Sorry, can you hold on....

----------------------------------------
You know this is not the good way to answer the unexpected/expected phone call from HR/job agent.

Here is how you should prepare for the first phone interview:
-- write down what you want to say in a paper/papers
-- paste the paper on the wall near your phone
-- read the paper when the phone interview start

Here is the most important: so called "3 minute drill":
-- Before you answer the first question to HR, or if you find a chance in the interview process, say:
"Before I answer that question, would you please let me briefly introduce myself?
I graduated from the top university in China: University of Science and Technology of China which is the only university belongs to Chinese Academy of Science, and University of PaloAlto in United States.
I have been worked ... years in China, teaching ... at .. University.
I have been teached at ... University of Rochester in New York.
I have been focused on the topic of ... research, published .. junk papers, I am the top expert in ... field.

-- write down the above content on a index note card.
-- read the card, try to finish it within 3 min.
-- practice, practice, read, read, read, untill you can fluently talk it no matter when the phone is ring...

Summary:
The idea of "3 min drill" is: use the first 3 min to dump your strong point to the interviewer, to show your strong point to them. No matter what questions they ask you, you need sell out what you need sell to them.

For you, the interview process is a selling process.
Be well prepared, write down what you plan to say on a paper.
Read, read, read, practice, practice, practice.

HR Golden Rule and how to follow it

We all want a higher salary.

About Salary, HR Golden Rule: Whoever mentioned the salary number at first, who is the loser.

It requires experience and skill to practice the Golden Rule. (Those friends who did successfully apply the Golden Rule knew what I mean.)

In many cases, regardless who is the winner or loser, your top goal is try to get an offer and you have to work WITH HR/Agent to make the ball rolling, in these cases, you do not need follow the Golden Rule.

If you don’t have a job now, you may ask HR/Agent what is the salary range for the position, after you get the range, if you feel you are happy with it, then say it is OK for you to start within that range (since they already mentioned the range). If they do not tell and keep asking you what number are you looking for, then you may tell them what salary you can start with (make sure you did your home work and you know the range for the position). Because you do not have a job anyway, so moving towards getting an offer is more important then to be a winner. But don’t say “I don’t care.” (You really care!)

If you just want to jump for a higher money and don’t want to waste your time and HR/Agent’s time, then you may again ask them what is the salary range for the position. You may also share with them in what range (within 10k range) you currently make. So HR/Agent and you can be in the same page to target a good position for you. You stop at this point if the salary they can offer is too low, not worth you push forward.

Two stages of the interview process
Who mention the salary first, who is the looser

How to answer Salary Questions
How to let HR tell you the salary for the position

If your current Salary is too low, then don’t tell
If you don’t want tell your salary. bbwb

3 hour on-site interview Dear AmoyGril,
Congratulation for the coming 3 hours on-site interview!

Please don't worry too much, they use their expensive time to give you a free interview training, no matter what, you are the winner already.
Please don't worry too much, nobody will sit down in there with you for three hours.
Usually the three hours interview will break to several 45min or 1 hr sessions, one or two people talk with you at each session.

Before answer any of their question, make sure know who you are talking with, ask their title and if what role they are in the company, and whether they are the people to make the final decision.

Technical people will focus on technical questions with some behavior questions, and sometime with some little puzzle ask you to solve (only they know the answer, so even you faild with the puzzle, you are OK. They just want to show you they are smarter than you, who care).
Managers will focus on behavior questions and one of the most important factor for manager's interview is they want to make sure they like your smiling.
In any case, bring lots of smiling is very helpful. Start smiling after you leave your car in the parking lot (they are watching you from the office window...).

Please use the quick time in the begining of the interview to make judgement of what kind of the person that interviewer is. This is very important. If he/she is a faster style guy, then you need answer evething quick. If he/she is a lazy and slow styled, then you need treat him/her as grand pa/ma, take your time, slowly answer his/her question with smile, not be hurry, becasuse he/she likes the slow people like him/her, so he/she can keep his/her job secure.

Prepare several questions to ask them.

Please bring couple copies of your resume and two pieces of blank paper to take a note if you need, at least let them feel you are a responsible person and listen carefully what they are saying, and taking note.

You win the interview by your attitute, your voice and your smile, not your skill.

They will look your resume and ask you questions from here. If you find out that they don't know how to do interview, don't laugh in front of them. keep it as a secret and share with us.

You can repeat the same key point to different group of the people, so it will waste their time quicker. And you may feel nervers in the begining, but doing much better when you realized you are not too bad because you already get trained by ???.

No matter what questions they ask you, you should always find time to say:
" Yah, I guess this is a good chance to allow me introduce myself to you, I was educated at .... and worked ....(just say how good you are and how you did previously, in 2 min)."

Please well prepaed for your interview, repeat what you wplan to say many many times, untill you can say it easily. look people's fore-head instead of look their eye.

Please be confident. You are the best candidate!
Again, no matter what, they are willing to spend their expesive time to allow you to mess up their expensive carpet and give you free interview
training, what do you need worry? Nothing. You are the winner already!

Thanks!

How to answer the question: What is your weak point?

Don't you hate this question -你的弱点是什么?

Usually during the on-site interview, you will be asked:
-- Can you tell me/us what is your weak point?

Bad answer:
-- My English is not good enough.
-- I do not have a degree in USA.
-- I have never worked in USA.

Comment:
During interview process, you are a sales person, the product you are trying to sell is yourself. All the answers you are going to give should focus on this goal. Based on thie key point, turn the chance of answering this question to a selling opportunity againi for yourself.

Better answers:
-- Weak point? Let me think, Yah, sometime my collegues saying that I am too picky, I always trying to make the job done in 100% perfect.

-- Weak point? I guess I focused too much on work, I couldn't stop think of my project even after I arrive in home.

-- Weak point? You know I come from China, in Chinese culture I was educated working hard and speaking less, so sometime my manager sayinig that I am too quiet.

-- Weak point? I do not like change job very often, I staied in the same company for many years...

Summary: Sales, sales, sele yourself. Now you should feel comfortable to use your weak point to sell yourself. Actually you should use all the chance to sell your self. thhis is the only focus for the interview process....
