For me it started with Canon's autofocus lenses. I originally used Nikon manual focus, but when I went to autofocus, I chose Canon. They had the edge (and still do) with their selection of Ultrasonic Motor (USM) lenses at a time when many Nikon lenses were still manual focus are being driven by a drive-shaft from a motor inside the camera body. Then Canon started introducing Image Stabilizer (IS) lenses in 1995, and still hold a substantial lead there. I also own a couple Canon Tilt-Shift (TS) lenses, the 24mm and 45mm TS-E, which Nikon didn't (and still don't) offer. Now, I'm looking forward to getting the newly introduced 28-300L IS lens to replace my aging 28-135 IS (which originally came out in 1998, 4 years before Nikon's 24-120 VR) and 70-200/4L (which is also a nice Canon gem). It's also nice that Canon's lenses are generally less expensive than Nikon's. My feeling is that you get more bang for your buck with Canon.

As for their bodies, Canon's bodies have always had a bit of a price and features advantage over the equivalent Nikon bodies, too. When I moved to digital, I sat out the D30 in 2000, sat out the D60 in 2002, then finally made the jump with the 10D when it was introduced at $1500 in 2003. The Nikon equivalent, the D100, was $200 more expensive at the time, had a much smaller image buffer, no mirror lock, no high speed flash sync, no wireless flash, etc. I am quite impressed with the specifications of the $1000 D70. It certainly serves as a great wake up call for Canon to come out with something new and better. But in terms of overall technical innovation, I think Canon still holds the lead, especially with what we are seeing in the high-end Canon DSLR offerings (1D, 1DS, 1D MKII). It also doesn't hurt that they've been making their own sensors since the D30.

My biggest concern right now is that if there isn't much solid competition for the Canon juggernaut that Canon may lose its value edge (ie. their prices go up in the absence of competition). That's why I think Nikon's D70 is such an important introduction for the industry. It means that Canon can't get complacent or greedy. That should help keep prices down. In the near term, I think that if the 1D MKII comes out at a reasonable street price of, say, $3500, then it will be the all-round pro body I have been waiting for-- speed and resolution.

广角和微距的镜头,我基本上定下目标了,两个加起来 $1300,算物美价廉的了.这样,旅游,街景和一般的花花草草都能应付了.加上滤镜等乱七八糟的附件,初期买,差不多只能到此为止了.

其他的,是第二第三回合了.

中焦段的 EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM和 EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM,性能不相上下,价格相差$300,还没想好娶谁.不过反正也是第二轮了,慢慢想吧.

最难决定的还是长焦段,一个大白的价格可以买一个小小白加一个300mm的定焦了,这样的配置是不是更好呢? 当然,这样看起来,大白并不算重了 而且大白是2.8光圈的,对于远处的花鸟鱼虫的背景虚化还是有好处的. 嗯,有待进一步查阅资料......

there are a lots of rumors about the 10D discontinue and 10D replacement on internet. By my feelings, this should not happen in next 6 months or until this September.

Even if Canon does have something in the late development stage, they should not disclose it yet and work on it to even more improve the future camera (no more bitter talk about any issue like i.e. the focus issue even if it does not exist in any 10D). Canon made very good market strategy in DSLR.
First 10D enhanced replacement could confuse those waiting for 1D Mark II, secondly the 10D is selling so great there is no need to replace it yet, and third the competition from other companies like Nikon is weak.
Most likely will NOT be a 10D replacement but more likely in the new slot between the 1DMkII and 10D. Using the new 8 MP sensor with the 1.3 crop factor. Slower buffer and FPS. Hope it has the new WB on chip and much better AF of the 1DMkII as well. And the price will be ~$2500.
This make a lot of sense but we will just have to wait and see.

The price:

I think that the price will not drop in at least 1-2 month. It is possibly out of stock in many stores next month. If the Nikon D70 does not at least equal the 10D images, the price will not drop much in next half year. In the future the big price drop will depend on the yield of the big CMOS chip and competition from other companies like Nikon. I would be very surprised if the price of 10D will drop 100% in one year. It is also very bad that the price has not been changed since last April or May even the 300D was shown up in August 2003.

Buy or wait ??
